Chapter Five
Doug Brown
With his temple throbbing and left ear numb and bleeding, Chief Lee was sure he was dreaming.
He was bumping along, floating above the ground, arms spread like wings. His feet trailed behind him, the toes of his boots scuffing the pavement as he moved forward, eyes blurring and then refocussing. There was movement either side of him too, but he couldnât make out what it was.
The brightness dimmed, and he sensed heâd flown inside a building. He felt his body rotate, not under his control, and dark shapes, shadowy figures of men, were manhandling him. He felt a hard chair under his buttocks, his head flopping forward, a flat metal surface against his cheek.
He breathed, tried to focus his mind, eyes closed. This was no dream.
Where am I?
He blinked his eyes open, took in his surroundings. The old police station. He had been on the beach, waiting for the launchâ¦
Wat?
The memories came tumbling back, the sergeantâs treachery knifing into Leeâs brain. His subordinate, the man he had only recently come to trust, had set him up. He let his eyes droop closed.
The blow to his head, being carried here. For what reason?
âHeâs taking a long time to come around. You hit him too hard, Kit.â
âHeâll be all right.â
The first man to speak, the one Lee assumed must be Sombat, pulled his left arm and he felt the distinctive metal, heard the rasp of handcuffs being applied to his wrist, the rattle as they were attached to the steel table leg. He kept his eyes half-closed, taking time to recover, to regain his wits. And strength.
Hands were pulling at his belt, then were gone. A clatter as an object was dropped on the far end of the table. Through slitted eyes he could just make out the shape of his gun in its holster. Too far to reach with his free right hand.
A large brown envelope dropped in front of his nose, and his heart began a cold despairing slide in his chest. The men had intercepted the package for Bangkok, the one he had entrusted to Kate containing the bodily fluids heâd hoped would prove the corruption he had uncovered.
Betrayed by Watâwho had probably lied about having photographs of the Russian girlâand now this. He plunged into despair and wallowed in negative thoughts. It was useless.
He was useless.
Why bother resisting. They might as well kill him, get it over with.
A hand grasped his hair, yanked his head up, another prised his left eyelids apart. He rolled his eyes so that only the whites showed, heard a grunted curse, then his head was released. Lee let it flop to the tabletop again.
âYou buffalo! Heâs in no fit state to speak or write anything. Go and get some water, see if thatâll revive him.â
âThereâs none here. The mains are off.â
âThen walk to the shop. Get me a bottle while youâre at it⦠Go on. You were the one who whacked him too hard. Khun Harryâll have our bollocks chopped if we canât get him to sign.
